Baby Acne

Baby acne is usually seen on the cheeks, chin, and forehead. It can be present at birth but usually develops around 2 to 4 weeks of age, however, baby acne may appear up to 4 months after birth and can last for 12 to 18 months. The acne condition can look worse when the baby is crying or fussy, or any other instance that increases blood flow to the skin.

Baby acne occurs when hormonal changes in the body stimulate oil glands in the baby's skin. Baby acne is caused by exposure to the mother's hormones. Small red bumps, sometimes with white dots in the center, may be seen on a newborn's face.

Treatment
Baby acne is common, harmless and temporary - usually disappears on its own. There isn't much you can do to prevent baby acne. If you are concerned about your baby's complexion always consult with your baby's doctor, the doctor may recommend a medicated cream or other treatment. Also, always check with the doctor incase the acne is being caused by an underlying condition.

Normal washing is usually all that is required to treat baby acne. Use plain water or mild baby soap and only bathe your baby every 2-3 days. Avoid acne medicines used by adolescents and adults, they are harsh on baby skin.
